Users and Clients of ECHO Tokens For CMR Operations

Subject:

CMR To Retire ECHO Tokens for Ingest and Search Operations

What's Happening:

To facilitate the planned retirement of CMR's Legacy Services codebase, the CMR is phasing out its support of ECHO tokens for all operations. Currently, ECHO tokens can be used to authenticate and authorize requested operations submitted to the CMR by users and clients. Once ECHO tokens are retired, users and clients will be required to use Launchpad or Earthdata Login (EDL) tokens when sending requests to the CMR.

Action Needed:

For Ingest:

  1. If you are using Launchpad tokens for CMR ingest with the 'Authorization' header, no action needed.
  2. If you are using Launchpad tokens for CMR ingest with the 'Echo-Token' header, you will need to transition to use the 'Authorization' header.
    1. To use the 'Authorization' header for CMR ingest, see Launchpad Authentication User's Guide
  3. If you are using EDL or ECHO tokens for CMR ingest, you will need to transition to use Launchpad tokens.
    1. To use Launchpad tokens, see the Launchpad Authentication User's Guide

For Search:

  1. If you are using Launchpad tokens with the 'Authorization' header, no action needed.
  2. If you are using Launchpad tokens with the 'Echo-Token' header, you will need to transition to use the 'Authorization' header.
  3. If you are using EDL tokens with the 'Authorization: Bearer' header, no action is needed.
  4. If you are using EDL tokens with the 'Echo-Token' header, you will need to transition to use the 'Authorization: Bearer' header.
    1. To use the 'Authorization: Bearer' header for CMR search, see https://cmr.earthdata.nasa.gov/search/site/docs/search/api.html
    2. To use the 'Authorization: Bearer' header for CMR Access Control, see https://cmr.earthdata.nasa.gov/ingest/site/docs/access-control/api.html
  5. If you are using ECHO tokens, you will need to transition to use EDL tokens.
    1. To generate an EDL token, please visit How to Generate a User Token
    2. To see EDL token creation and usage examples, please visit the CMR Data Partner User Guide#ToCreateaToken

Timeline:

To avoid disruption of CMR operations, users and clients should migrate away from using ECHO tokens no later than April 2023.

Who Is Affected:

All users and clients that currently use ECHO Tokens and/or the Echo-Token header.
