Goal and discussion items

The OB.DAAC UWG met virtually on 22 September 2023. The primary objective of this meeting was to present the latest developments from OB.DAAC, encompassing website enhancements, assimilation progress, cloud migration status, SeaDAS updates, and forthcoming PACE mission support (HACKATHON), among others. Of notable importance in this session was our invitation extended to ARSET to explore potential collaborative ventures between ARSET and OB.DAAC in the realm of future training initiatives.  Given the increasing demand within the ocean color community for training on data usage and applications, particularly in light of the imminent launch of the PACE mission and the transition of data to the cloud, the insights and perspectives from the ARSET side would be invaluable.

  • ARSET training and potential collaboration
  • Ocean color website enhancements and assimilation progress
  • Cloud migration status
  • SeaDAS updates
  • Forthcoming PACE mission support (HACKATHON)
  • Open science and other topics

Key points

  • UWG is happy with the attending of Amita Mehta from ARSET team. Great discussions were inspired by her presentation. UWG suggests improving the presence of ARSET on ocean color website.
  • UWG urgesDAAC to keep the unique features of the L1/L2 browser and improve the geospatial data search and subset tool even after being absorbed by NASA Earthdata.
  • The members expressed concerns about data and computing in cloud, and urge OB.DAAC to keep the capability of SeaDAS including selection of different algorithms, key products, key computing ability, such as the trial of different atmospheric correction schemes, etc.
  • UWG is looking forward to upcoming training opportunities for SeaDAS, PACE data, PACE HACKATHON.
  • UWG is curious about open science and expressed concerns of related cost to publish open-access articles.

Action items

The following are the action items for OB.DAAC based on the UWG discussion:

  • Address ARSET training courses and materials on Ocean Color Website
  • Add a timeline table on the website for different missions to address: services, resolutions, overpass time, available products for each mission, etc.
  • Work with Earthdata to keep L1/L2 browser features, especially the granule search capability. Develop the geo-spatial/location-based search and subset capabilities.
