NASA's Earth Science Data and Information Systems (ESDIS) Standards Coordination Office (ESCO) conducts reviews of proposed standards, practices, and technical information relevant to the ESDIS mission. Documents are reviewed as part of the ESDIS Project's standards process. Approved documents are published and listed on the Standards Requirements and References page.

ESCO is conducting a Request For Comments (RFC) for the Science Data Transfer Protocol (SDTP) as a standard interface mechanism for electronic transfer of science data from one ESDIS element to another.

The SDTP is used for the transfer of data from one ESDIS element to another. For example, the SDTP mechanism would be used for an on-going transfer of science data from a Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS) to a Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC). The subscriber pulls data from the provider using Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTP) over Transport Layer Security (TLS) (HTTPS) methods. This RFC document provides a brief introduction, with the full SDTP specification detailed in Section 3 of the Science Data Transfer Protocol (SDTP) Interface Control Document (ICD).

All review comments are due by Friday, May 26, 2023.

This review considers the approval of the SDTP as an accepted practice for use in NASA Earth science data systems. Reviewers should evaluate the content of this proposal to identify any strengths, weaknesses, omissions, obstacles, and/or limitations related to the endorsement of the SDTP as a standard interface mechanism for electronic transfer of electronic transfer of science data from one ESDIS element to another. Please provide feedback by adding comments, requesting clarification, proposing changes, or identifying issues.
